Social workers make a difference in peoples’ lives. They are not only concerned with helping individuals but also with broader social issues such as poverty, unemployment and domestic violence. Our accredited master’s program prepares students for leadership roles in their communities and in the profession. It encourages critical thinking and analysis of structural barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential; promote values of respect, dignity and the worth of all people; and assist students in acquiring knowledge, skills and values to work in diverse and cross-cultural environments. We offer a one year option for candidates with a Bachelor of Social Work and a two year option for candidates with an honours degree in a discipline other than social work.

Carleton students enjoy easy access to these organizations as well as a range of archives and library resources. Faculty Research Highlights
- Canadian social welfare policy and in particular on social assistance, Indigenous social welfare, immigration, the history of the Canadian welfare state, and on women and social policy.
- Research related to the direct practice of social work including such issues as women and violence, children in care, and race in social work practice.
- Issues related to the evaluation of social programs and services and with education for practice.
- Research projects conducted in close co-operation with local social service agencies and with professional organizations and community based organizations.
